Even today, markets are regularly held on the Neumarkt, an old trading location in the town of Zwickau. The tradition of the market place is preserved with the addition of the new apartment building with commercial areas on the ground floor to neighbouring premises. In addition to the rejuvenation of the square as a lively meeting point in the town, a functional, architecturally modern brick building was constructed, which harmonises and blends in well with the existing historic buildings.

Energy efficiency with bricks

The newly constructed building contains 28 two-to-five room apartments with areas between 52 and 146 square metres. The almost 50 cm thick exterior walls of the apartment building with commercial units consist of monolithic brickwork, which meets the modern requirements for energy efficiency without additional insulation.

Sound insulation for well-being

A special feature of this project is the high level of sound insulation, which enables people to live together in peace. For this, the architects had to integrate the interaction of exterior, staircase and apartment partition walls into their planning. The selection of the right materials was equally important. Three different Poroton brick types were selected in order to achieve a level of sound insulation which goes far beyond the usual standard.
